The arquebus and hackbut, the first shoulder fired arms
1530 The wheel lock appears, allowing guns to be carried ready
for firing, leading to the development of the pistol, a singlehanded
weapon.
1547 Earliest flintlocks developed in Spain.
1570 Rifled firearms developed in Germany.
1579 First use of red-hot shot from cannon.
1596 Introduction of a wooden, gunpowder-filled fuse to ignite
explosive shells so as to burst them in the air over a target.
1625 Introduction of field carriages for field artillery.
1635 The perfected French flintlock mechanism, which becomes
the standard ignition method in universal use by 1660.
1647 French introduce the bayonet.
