James Graham, Marquis of Montrose,
was a brilliant General, who fought with great skill on
behalf of King Charles I during the period of the ‘Great
Civil War’, 1642-1660. His objective was to engage
the Covenanting army in Scotland and thus reduce their support
of the parliamentary cause in England and Ireland. During
his campaign of 1644/45 his small army of Irish regulars
and Highlanders crossed and re-crossed the Scottish Highlands,
whilst battling against the elements and superior forces.
